Protecting financial interests in case of divorce

One of the most complicated aspects of a Kentucky divorce is navigating the financial issues. Money can sometimes be the source of contention during a marriage, and these issues can grow exponentially during the emotionally challenging process of divorce. Fortunately, there are ways that a couple can ensure that they never have to deal with a litigious battle over money.

Superstar Johnny Depp and his wife of 15 months are currently locked in a battle over financial matters. Amber Heard recently filed for divorce from the famous actor and requested spousal support. In turn, Depp requested that the judge deny her request as well as any request from Heard to have her legal fees covered. According to reports, the couple did not have a prenuptial agreement.

Couples entering marriage could benefit from a prenuptial agreement, no matter their income level. This legal protection is particularly beneficial if one or both parties has a significant amount of wealth before the marriage, expects to have significant future earnings, owns valuable assets or has children from a previous relationship. A prenup will outline how finances will be divided in case of divorce and how marital property will be distributed.

A Kentucky prenuptial agreement is not planning to divorce, but rather is a smart way to protect one's financial interests long into the future. Additionally, these agreements can be drafted in a way that is specifically tailored to the unique needs of the individual client. A lawyer can help negotiate and draft a comprehensive and equitable agreement.
