Money and the real reasons many couples divorce

If asked about the leading reasons that people end their marriages, Kentucky readers may say that money is one of the most common causes. While financial woes and money problems do contribute toward the breaking down of a marriage, it may be more complicated than that. Recent studies and in-depth research seems to indicate that employment status, particularly that of the husband, may play a significant role in why people divorce.

Studies have found that men who are unemployed face a 3.3 percent chance of getting divorced in any given year. This is one-third higher than men who have regular employment. Researchers have found that more than gender roles, division of housework or income of the couple, the employment of the husband is a main contributor toward the likelihood of divorce. Despite shifting cultural and societal norms, the husband is still expected to be the main earner.

The same studies found that in addition to the employment status of the husband, how a couple spends their time also contributes toward the chance of filing for divorce. Numbers also suggest that women may initiate as many as two-thirds of all divorces. No matter who filed the divorce petition or why a couples divorces, a person would be wise to take steps to protect his or her financial interests.

Divorce and the reasons behind it are complicated. It is critical to work with an experienced Kentucky lawyer who can take steps to protect one's interests by seeking a beneficial outcome to all financial matters. To better understand what to expect during this process, a case evaluation is recommended.
