Father faces charges of child custody interference

Families take many different shapes nowadays. Even here in Kentucky, there are likely families who are headed by people other than the traditional father and mother. It is no longer uncommon for grandparents to have been awarded child custody of their grandchildren for a variety of reasons.

Even though grandparents may have been awarded custody of their grandchildren, that decision may not always be easy to accept by one or the other of the biological parents. Recently, a father was arrested after he allegedly failed to return his son to his grandparents at the appointed time. The grandparents responded by contacting the authorities as they purportedly feared that the father may attempt to leave the country with the minor boy. Their fears were supposedly based on statements the man had made previously concerning his desire to relocate to another country.

The police located the father and son at the man's residence. He denied that he had a definite time for the child to be returned to his grandparents' home. The boy was taken back to his grandparents care. Police then arrested and charged the man with several offenses in connection to the allegation that he failed to bring his son back at the stipulated the time. He has been granted bail and is awaiting further proceedings in this case.

It is unknown why the grandparents were awarded custody of this child, but a family court believed that it would be in the child's best interest to be cared for by them. Grandparents or other relatives who believe that a child is not being cared for properly in his or her current situation may also seek a remedy by petitioning a Kentucky family court for child custody. There are knowledgeable professionals who can assist in this process and help ensure that a child in need is given the best opportunity to thrive in a nurturing home.
