How to handle disputes over the new school year

The next few weeks signify the end of another school year. This is a time where kids are so excited about summer vacation that the next school year is likely the furthest from their minds. However, for divorcing parents of school-age children, the next school year should be at the top of your agenda.

Why is this? Essentially because a new school year could be just as much an adjustment for parents as it is for the kids. When kids change schools, parents may be at odds regarding their respective responsibilities. Basically, some parents may have disputes over who is responsible for paying fees for sports leagues or accessories for extra-curricular activities. Moreover, parenting time schedules may have to be modified to accommodate kids’ schedule changes. While this may be best for the kids, parents may not be so willing to change with them.

Indeed,  some people may be set in their ways as they get older, and the same could be said about divorced and separated parents. Nevertheless, a great deal of heartbreak and money being lost can be avoided if parents can put their personal differences aside and act in their children’s best interests.

This notion should be taken seriously before a parent seeks an order to modify parenting time or custody because they don’t like how a change in their child’s schedule may negatively affect their time. .

However, if you are convinced that litigation is the only way to achieve your goals, consulting an experienced family law attorney can help you make an informed decision.
